Curatorial Rationale

Throughout the year I have discovered a lot about myself as an artist. Coming into the year I was more focused on pen and pencil drawings with very little color and meaning. By the end of the year I focused more on using vibrant colors and began to love using acrylics and markers. My overall theme for my pieces this year would have to be called “Through the Eye of the Beholder.” Not only does a lot of my art revolve around eyes, but when viewing my artwork I left it up for a lot of interpretation. I discovered my love to draw and paint what others may see as weird or ugly. I wanted people to think about what they think is beautiful. It is up for others to judge.

Let’s Take a Trip

Acrylic paint on canvas

8x8in.

This piece was inspired by the Psychedelic art movement in 1960 that involved artists such as Rick Griffin and Victor Moscoso. At the center of this piece there is an eye. Eyes represent all knowing, so of course I wanted to incorporate an eye into a psychedelic painting. Overall this piece was something that made me step out of my comfort zone, but I enjoyed doing quite a lot.

Halfway Handsome

Markers, pen

10.9x6.1in

This drawing was done using markers and outlined with a ballpoint pen. I found myself very fond of cartoony artwork, and after doing this piece I would consider it my favorite style. This face has one “non-ugly” aspect to it, the eye. It is attached to the theme of inner beauty, and how people may perceive others based on the way they look. The face is what the viewer makes of it. Some may consider it ugly, but others may just focus on the one eye that seems to look beautiful.

Perhaps You Should Look Away

Markers, pen

8.5x13.5in.

This artwork was inspired by the artist Peter Saul. It was done with markers, and outlined in a ballpoint pen. The idea for this piece of art is inner beauty. It is a portrait of not one’s outside appearance, but inside. The message I am trying to convey is even though you may look beautiful and dress beautifully, it does not matter if your inner beauty does not reflect your outer.

My Bored Face

Acrylic, wood

7.9x 14.5in.

The medium for this piece of art is acrylic paint on wood. The idea surfaced after I looked outside my window and saw those plastic faces you can stick into trees. I thought that I could spunk up the faces a bit, so I made my own and glued it to a piece of wood. I enjoyed doing a sculpture, and although I titled it “My Bored Face” one can decide for themselves what emotion it has.
